Conversation Table

This work was inspired by the 'writing conversation(筆談)' of the past, when it was a very common way of communicating amongst the countries using Chinese characters but different languages or dialects. Oral language in particular was easily transformed into different sounds depending on the environment, but a letter as hieroglyphics had a much stronger combination of meaning and inherent visual form. Thus this conversation is more like attempting to converge different visual boundaries on the one readable system.

The table was designed for a writing conversation. As there is a dark fabric-framed curtain between two people, each person can only see the opponent’s writing hand under the beam. When the sentence is finished, the upper plate of the table can be turned round to the opposite side so that the other person can continue the conversation.

During the conversation each participants listens to the sound of writing and has to wait until the other completes his sentence. It becames a synesthetic experience with subtle sound in silence, limited visual information and an unusual tempo, but strong immaterial nature of the writing system.
